Does insurance cover breast cancer prevention medications?
Last week we got some good news relating to breast cancer prevention medications – they will now be covered under the Affordable Care Act at no cost.
This means no co-pays and no co-insurance.
If you have Medicaid or Medicare, this also applies to you as well.
Breast cancer prevention medications, like Tamoxifen, are often given to high-risk women including those with a positive BRCA gene and those with a personal history of breast cancer.
Studies have shown that prevention medications, also called chemo-prevention, can reduce breast cancer risk by as much as 50%.
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force said that the decision to cover these medicationss stems from an increased effort reduce breast cancer rates among Americans.
Breast cancer screenings and annual physical exams are also covered in full.
So ladies, if you haven’t already done so, get your mammograms and if you’ve been holding off on getting prevention drugs due to cost, here’s your opportunity!
