Overcomers Workshop for Breast Cancer Survivors
By: Courtney Floyd
Registration is open now for a workshop taught by one of our wonderful patients Genny Small. This class is sure to change lives and shine some positive light on the darkness of a breast cancer diagnosis. I truly encourage any of you in the San Antonio area to join the Overcomers Workshop!
To get to know a little more about the inspiration behind the class, I asked Genny to simply share her heart. Here is what she had to say:
On July 26, 2014 at the age of 39, I heard the words "you have triple negative breast cancer". I was at the end of my third trimester of pregnancy with my 8th child and I could not believe the words I was hearing. Over the next 2 years I would receive dose dense chemotherapy, a double mastectomy with expanders, 5 more surgeries from an infection, flat with no reconstruction for almost a year & finally reconstruction with the DIEP flap. Never would I imagine that the endless cycles of being hit down to then rise again over and over would result in me writing the curriculum for the Overcomers workshops.
I noticed a common theme amongst my fellow pink sisters in arms as I was going through my valley. Each one of us had scars. Whether inside or outside we had all experienced trials in life and now cancer would be another.
I am a daughter of a cancer survivor. My mother had ovarian cancer and sadly passed away at the young age of 49, so I know the pain of being a child with a mother who had cancer. Each of us have our own story to tell, a unique journey that makes us who we are. I wanted a place where women could do just that. They could share in those battle wounds but also walk out feeling empowered and whole. I believe that nothing is an accident in life. Each of us are created for a specific role and I have used my past roles to create this workshop.
The workshop motto states "women will walk from brokenness onto wholeness founded on the word of God." This workshop is 9 weeks long where we dive into topics that affect us all and we utilize the setting of small groups for half of our time in the sessions to allow woman to share with others. It's not always easy to confront the hurts we have in our lives but if we embrace our journey and see that someone out there needs to feel cared for because only we can relate based on what we have walked, then nothing we experience is ever meaningless.
"Use what you have walked to help others be made whole." I always share.
You will never be 100% because none of us are perfect. We are here on this earth for such a short time. Why not use that time to choose every day to bless another person with our words or actions?
Join me and other survivors as we dig deep, get real, lay the weight of what we have walked through down, and rise up to see that God shines brightly through brokenness.
