flaps good option for breast reconstruction_ PRMA Plastic Surgery

Flap-based breast reconstruction procedures, like the DIEP flap, offer patients a safe, natural implant-alternative option to reconstruction after a mastectomy.  Flap surgeries are permanent and are associated with fewer complications after radiation when compared to implant reconstruction options.  Patients also report less pain and an easier recovery experience following flap surgeries.

So, if flaps are such a great reconstruction options, why doesn’t every patient opt for them?

Lack of Awareness

A regular phrase we hear from patients is, “I wish I would have known about DIEP flap sooner.”

Fewer than 25% of patients are aware of ALL their options for breast reconstruction following a breast cancer diagnosis. Even with the passing of the Breast Cancer Patient Education Act, patients continue to report a lack of awareness.

This statistic is something PRMA strives to change! It is part of our mission to educate women and men on all options available for reconstruction, including the option of no reconstruction. With the help of amazing organizations, patient advocates and other healthcare providers, it is our hope that anyone seeking breast reconstruction will be provided the information they need to make an informed decision.

Access to Care

Because flap-based reconstruction procedures require specialized training, not all plastic surgeons are qualified to perform these advanced microsurgeries. For many patients, travel is necessary to access experienced surgeons and breast centers for flap surgeries.

Although traveling for breast reconstruction may seem overwhelming, many patients report the process being much easier than they imagined.  Costs associated with travel may also hinder many patients from traveling to gain access to advanced breast reconstruction surgeons.  Thankfully, there are many support organizations that can provide needed financial relief from the costs associated with traveling for surgery.

To assist patients wanting to travel to PRMA, we offer virtual consultations. Patients can discuss all their options with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons all from the comfort of their homes before they travel to see us. We also have a dedicated patient liaison team available to answer all patient questions and assist with travel planning.

Personal Choice

Although flap-based procedures like the DIEP flap are considered today’s ‘gold-standard’ for breast reconstruction, they are not always the best option for every patient. Patient preferences, medical history, anatomy and breast cancer treatment plan can all impact whether a flap-based procedure is the best option for a patient or not.  By engaging in shared-decision making, patients and surgeons can work together to determine the best breast reconstruction procedure to meet individual patient needs.
