Breast Cancer Surgery

What is Breast
Cancer Surgery?

A breast cancer diagnosis can feel overwhelming. Fortunately, understanding your options for surgery for breast cancer treatment is a powerful first step in reclaiming control. Breast cancer surgery refers to procedures that remove cancerous tissue from the breast and surrounding areas, and it’s often one of the first treatments recommended.

The most common types of breast cancer surgery include lumpectomy, which removes only the tumor and a margin of healthy tissue, and mastectomy, which involves removing part or all of the breast. Depending on the extent of the cancer and your personal preferences, mastectomy options can include nipple-sparing, skin-sparing, or total mastectomy.

Understanding Your Options

Every breast cancer diagnosis is unique, and so is every treatment path. Based on the size, location, and stage of your cancer, your PRMA breast surgeon will recommend one or more breast cancer surgical options tailored specifically to your medical needs and personal preferences.

Mastectomy Procedures

A mastectomy involves removing the entire breast and may be recommended when cancer is more advanced, when there is a genetic risk such as a BRCA mutation, or when radiation is not preferred. PRMA supports all mastectomy types, including skin-sparing and nipple-sparing options, to help preserve natural appearance and support optimal reconstruction outcomes.

For patients traveling from outside the area, PRMA can coordinate with a local breast surgeon to perform the mastectomy so reconstruction can be completed here without unnecessary delays.

Lumpectomy Reconstruction

A lumpectomy removes only the tumor and a small margin of surrounding tissue, preserving most of the breast. When paired with reconstruction, this approach, often called oncoplastic surgery, can reshape the breast for a natural contour and symmetry. It's typically pursued for early-stage cancers where breast conservation is possible and desired. PRMA works closely with your surgical team to ensure optimal cosmetic and oncologic outcomes.

Immediate vs. Delayed Reconstruction

After a breast cancer diagnosis, one of the first choices you may face is whether to have breast reconstruction at the same time as your mastectomy (immediate reconstruction) or to wait until after completing additional treatments like chemotherapy or radiation (delayed reconstruction). A PRMA surgeon will help walk you through this option.
