A common misconception we often hear at PRMA is, “My breasts will look unnatural after breast reconstruction.”
The answer is no.
Patients have many options when it comes to breast reconstruction today. These options range from “flap” techniques such as the DIEP flap which uses the patient’s own tissue to create a “natural,” warm breast to implant reconstruction. Breast reconstruction can also be performed at the same time as a lumpectomy to maximize the cosmetic results and maintain breast symmetry. This is known as “Oncoplastic surgery”.
Breast reconstruction surgery is intended to produce a natural-looking and feeling breast. It’s very important to find a board-certified plastic surgeon who is well-versed in all the different breast reconstruction techniques and has a good reputation for producing natural-looking results.
The timing of breast reconstruction surgery can have an effect on the final cosmetic outcome. Immediate breast reconstruction is often linked to the best cosmetic outcomes. This is due to the fact that a skin-sparing mastectomy can usually be performed at the same time. This results in the natural breast skin envelope being saved and less visible scarring. Some patients may benefit from a nipple-sparing mastectomy, which preserves the original nipple and areola.
However, this does not mean patients who have delayed reconstruction have poor outcomes. In fact, with advances in breast reconstruction techniques, patients are reporting the same high satisfaction rates following delayed reconstruction as their immediate reconstruction patient counterparts.
“You can rest assured that all tissue-based reconstruction will give you a soft-looking and feeling breast. That is the specialty and core service of our practice,” shares PRMA Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Steven Pisano.
