Wearing Deodorant After Breast Reconstruction Surgery

When can I resume wearing deodorant after breast reconstruction surgery?
Although it may seem like a straightforward question, many patients are unsure when the appropriate time to begin applying deodorant again after surgery is.
At PRMA we ask all patient to arrive to the hospital squeaky clean. This means no lotion, perfumes or deodorant. Following surgery, the in-hospital nurses do ask that patients avoid the use of deodorant. However, once discharged (at PRMA our patients are typically able to go home after 1-3 days depending on the type of reconstruction they had) patients can resume wearing deodorant.
For revision surgery, the same rules apply. No deodorant the morning of surgery, but as soon as patients are home, they can resume wearing it.
Some patients do choose to avoid using deodorants and antiperspirants all together due to the worry of it increasing their risk of developing breast cancer. Although there have been no scientific studies to prove this theory, it is a personal choice we are happy to support.
