Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

What is an Abdominoplasty?

An abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen and tightens the underlying muscles for a firmer, flatter midsection. It's one of the most effective ways to restore your shape after pregnancy, weight loss, or the natural effects of aging — results that diet and exercise alone often can't reach.

At PRMA Plastic Surgery, our surgical team pairs technical precision with an artistic eye, tailoring every tummy tuck to your body, your goals, and the outcome you want.

Understanding Your Options

Not every patient needs the same approach. Your surgeon will recommend the technique that best fits your anatomy, skin laxity, and goals.

Mini Tummy Tuck

A shorter incision addresses loose skin and mild muscle laxity below the navel. Best for patients with good muscle tone above the belly button and a faster recovery in mind.

Standard (Full) Tummy Tuck

A standard tummy tuck is the most common approach and addresses skin and muscle laxity across the entire abdomen. Ideal for patients with stretched muscles or excess skin following pregnancy.

Extended Tummy Tuck

Builds on the full tummy tuck by extending the incision to address excess skin along the flanks and lower back. Best for patients with laxity that wraps toward the sides.

Fleur-de-Lis Tummy Tuck

Combines a horizontal and vertical incision to remove excess skin in both directions. Best suited for patients with significant skin laxity following major weight loss.

Circumferential Tummy Tuck (Belt Lipectomy)

Addresses excess skin that wraps around the entire torso. Typically recommended for patients who have lost a substantial amount of weight, including post-bariatric patients.

What to Expect During Surgery

Your tummy tuck is performed under general anesthesia at an accredited surgical facility. Your surgeon makes an incision low on the abdomen, positioned so the resulting scar can be concealed beneath most clothing and swimwear.

From there, your surgeon tightens the underlying abdominal muscles and removes excess skin and fat. In many cases, the belly button is repositioned to maintain natural, proportional contours as the skin is redraped.

Once the muscle repair and skin removal are complete, your surgeon closes the incision and applies dressings. Depending on the extent of your procedure, you may go home the same day or stay for observation.

Tummy Tuck Recovery Timeline

  • Week 1:
Expect swelling, tightness, and some discomfort, which can be managed with prescribed medication. Most patients need help with daily tasks and should avoid bending or lifting.
  • Week 2:
Swelling begins to subside, and energy levels improve. Many patients return to desk work or light daily routines, though strenuous activity is still off-limits.
  • Week 3:
By the third week, discomfort continues to ease, and mobility improves. Your surgeon may clear you for light walking and gradually increased activity.
  • Week 4:
After about a month, most patients feel significantly more like themselves, with continued improvement in contour as residual swelling resolves over the following months.

Am I a Good Tummy Tuck Candidate?

A tummy tuck works best for patients who are close to their goal weight and want to address stubborn skin and muscle laxity that hasn't responded to diet or exercise. You may be a good candidate for a tummy tuck procedure if:

  • You are a non-smoker or willing to quit before and after surgery

  • You are done having children

  • You are in good overall health with no uncontrolled medical conditions

  • You have excess abdominal skin or fat that persists despite a healthy lifestyle

  • You have realistic expectations for your results

  • You are at a stable, healthy weight

Will Insurance Cover Abdominoplasty?

A tummy tuck is typically considered an elective cosmetic procedure, so it's usually not covered by insurance. In rare cases, coverage may apply if the procedure addresses a functional impairment, such as a chronic skin condition — your care team can help you understand your specific situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does recovery take after a tummy tuck?
Most patients take 2 to 3 weeks off work and resume most normal activities within 4 to 6 weeks. Full results continue to refine over several months as residual swelling resolves.
Will I have visible scarring?
Yes, a tummy tuck leaves a permanent scar, but your surgeon places it low on the abdomen so it can typically be hidden beneath underwear and swimwear.
Can I combine a tummy tuck with other procedures?
Many patients combine a tummy tuck with liposuction or breast surgery as part of a Mommy Makeover. Your surgeon will discuss whether combining procedures is safe and appropriate for you.
What's the difference between a tummy tuck and liposuction?
Liposuction removes fat, while a tummy tuck also tightens the muscle and removes excess skin. Patients with loose skin or separated abdominal muscles typically need a tummy tuck to achieve their goals.
Why should I choose PRMA for my tummy tuck?
PRMA's surgeons bring the same surgical precision and attention to detail that built our reputation in complex reconstructive surgery to every tummy tuck we perform. You'll get a personalized surgical plan, a dedicated care team from consultation through recovery, and results tailored to your body and goals.
