Foster School of Medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in El Paso, followed by a general surgery residency at the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School. He then pursued advanced subspecialty training at the University of Southern California's Keck Medical School, completing a fellowship in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, followed by a specialized fellowship in Microsurgical Reconstruction — training designed for surgeons who focus on the most intricate, tissue-based approaches to rebuilding the body after cancer.

Throughout his training, Dr. Lara has shown a consistent commitment to leadership and education. He served as Administrative Chief Resident in Plastic Surgery at USC Keck Medical School and was elected to the Berne Society of Academic Surgeons.
