Are textured breast implants safe?
If you are considering breast implants either for cosmetic surgery or breast reconstruction surgery and have done any research on breast implants lately, you may be concerned about headlines stating that breast implants cause cancer. Here’s what you need to know:
According to the FDA, individuals with textured breast implants have a very low risk of developing breast implant associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL).
In response to the latest research and action from European health officials, Allergan (an implant manufacturer) announced it will no long sell textured breast implants in the European market. This announcement was made following France’s Agence Nationale de Sécurité du Médicament (ANSM) recalling of Allergan’s textured implant because of their link to BIA-ALCL.
Although Allergan states they “disagree with ANSM’s request,” they are “fully cooperating with the authority.” Interestingly, Allergan spokesmen also states that “the ANSM request, and this action, is not based on any new scientific evidence regarding these products. Furthermore, ANSM has not identified any immediate risk to the health of women with textured breast implants.”
At PRMA, we typically do not use textured implants.
