The Medical Board of California (MBC) has unanimously voted against members of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (ABCS) promoting themselves as “board certified” cosmetic surgeons.
Currently the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) is the only board acknowledged by the National Board of Medical Specialties.
“This is a huge win for patient safety,” says Dr. Peter Ledoux. “With stricter laws in place, patients will be less likely to be deceived by a surgeon claiming to be ‘board-certified’ but having not undergone the higher level of training required of a plastic surgeon board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.”
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, “the MBC has repeatedly found that ABCS falls short of the state’s standard that requires their training programs to be equivalent in scope, content, and duration to training accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.”
So why is this important?
Board certification matters! In the US, any licensed physician can legally perform cosmetic surgery regardless of what their specialty is or where they received their cosmetic surgery training. When searching for a surgeon to perform cosmetic surgery, we recommend patients seek surgeons who are board certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS).
