Vascularized Omentum Lymph Node Transfer (VOLT)

Vascularized Omentum lymph node transfer (VOLT) is one of the most advanced surgical procedures available to treat lymphedema (arm swelling).

How Vascularized Omentum Lymph Node Transfer Is Performed

The omentum is specialized lymphatic tissue inside the abdomen. It’s job is to help treat inflammation inside the abdomen. It’s a very large organ, which means surgeons can actually use a small piece of it without your body missing it at all.  A small piece of omentum is delicately removed from inside the abdomen using tiny incisions and either laparoscopy or robotic surgery. This “omentum flap” containing healthy lymph nodes is then transferred to the swollen arm to replace the damaged tissue that is no longer draining lymphatic fluid as it should. Once these lymph nodes are moved to the arm and reconnected using microsurgery, they help redirect the fluid away from the swollen area. This helps reduce swelling and improves the symptoms of lymphedema over time.

While there is no cure for lymphedema, surgical options like the “VOLT” procedure can significantly reduce arm swelling over time. Currently, PRMA offers VOLT as an inpatient procedure.

It is important for patients to know that not all insurance plans cover this procedure and patients may have out of pocket expenses. At PRMA, we verify insurance coverage and obtain authorization prior to surgery so patients can be informed of their cost estimates up front. For easy financing options, Care Credit is also available.

Benefits of VOLT:

  • Improved symptoms: By addressing the underlying cause of lymphedema, VOLT can provide more effective and long-lasting relief from swelling and discomfort.
  • Better quality of life: Reduced limb volume and improved functionality can significantly improve patients’ quality of life, making daily activities much easier and increasing confidence.
  • Minimally invasive: VOLT is performed using microsurgical techniques, resulting in smaller incisions, reduced scarring, a lower risk of complications, and a faster recovery compared to traditional surgical options which are much more aggressive and higher risk.
  • Potential for long-term results: With proper postoperative follow-up and therapy, the benefits of VOLT can be sustained over the long term, offering very significant lymphedema life-changing relief for patients with lymphedema.
